Understanding the Role of the Interpreter - One More Way to Eliminate Bias in the Courtroom

This course will focus on the impartiality and neutrality of the Certified Court Interpreter - a highly trained professional who works under a strict Code of Ethics published by the Judicial Council of California. The duties and responsibilities of the interpreter will be spelled out as well as how a few key issues can certainly assist the legal professionals in bridging cultural gaps. Advertising Your Expertise and Experience: What Can You Do to Build Your Practice While Meeting Your Ethical Obligations?
The generation new clients and assignments from existing clients is critical to a law practice. Social media tools can greatly enhance a lawyer's ability to "spread the word" as to her qualifications and track record of successfully representing clients in similar matters. However, California attorneys also need to be mindful of the rules - even in the face of new technology - that govern lawyer advertising. This course will address, with a review of the applicable ethical rules and recent cases, best practices for lawyer advertising.

Conflicts of Interest and Disqualification Arising from Prior Client Representation: What are the Rules?
Conflicts of interest have been a consistent generator of disciplinary complaints and legal malpractice cases against lawyers. While problems occasionally arise from inadequate conflicts checking systems, more often they result from the acceptance of conflicting representations despite the presence of "red flags." This course addresses conflicts that arise from prior client engagements, waivable and nonwaivable conflicts and communicating ethically with clients as to conflict of interest issues.

The tables of contents of recent issues of California International Law Journal are posted on the public side of the site. Section members can request copies of articles from past issues by sending an email to the Sections Internet Coordinaor with your name, bar number, the name of the article and the issue in which it appeared.
